VI Symphony Youth & Education Programs 2007-2008 Season:
Elementary School Performances on Vancouver Island
The Vancouver Island Symphony presents a variety of programs for youth:
Elementary School Education Concert Series #1 Nanaimo Port Theatre

Gerald van Wyck, Conductor
This year, the Vancouver Island Symphony presents a new show entitled “Vancouver Island LEGENDS” for grades 5 to 7. This is the VI Symphony’s first education series for 2008-09. (Series 2 , Haydn’s 200th anniversary Surprise Party, will be presented in February for students in grades 3 to 6.) VIS Assistant Conductor Gerald van Wyck is a passionate music educator who loves to share his knowledge and musical experience with eager young minds.
LEGENDS follows the character, Sarah, as she chronicles her family history for a video contest. Through the process of making the video she interviews her friends, who include a First Nations child, a girl whose family came from China and settled in Nanaimo’s Chinatown, and a boy whose ancestors are Scottish and worked in the coalmines. Two actors play the various roles throughout the show. The 27-piece orchestra, conducted by Gerald van Wyck, also plays a variety of stage roles. Through dialogue, visuals and music, history will come to life for the students in the audience. Also included is the famous Nanaimo Bar, reference and music of Diana Krall and North America’s oldest concert band: Nanaimo Concert Band. Jason Nett, VIS Composer-in-Residence, has composed the original music, and local children’s writer, Eliza Gardiner, has written the script. The talents of all these contributors will benefit Island youth for years to come, as “Vancouver Island LEGENDS” becomes a regular component of the VI Symphony’s Education & Outreach programs.
Complete your LEGENDS experience with a visit to the New Nanaimo Regional District Museum. Tours will be scheduled before or after the performance and will take approximately 45 minutes. Fee is $2 per person.

EDUCATION CONCERT SERIES #2 February Grades 3-6 in Nanaimo and Campbell River
The Vancouver Island Symphony and its newly appointed artistic director, Pierre Simard, welcome the renowned Canadian musician, Guy Few, as together they present the second education series in February 2009, for students in grades 3 to 6. Guy Few is an amazing musician. He is a virtuoso performer on both the piano and the trumpet and he will surprise you with his skills in this Education Show.
Franz Joseph Haydn may have lived two hundred years ago, but his music is everlasting! He’s known as the “Father of the Symphony” — having written no less than 104 of them, he earned that title. He was friends with Mozart, was one of Beethoven’s music teachers, and is one of the handful of composers throughout Western history who are considered the most important of all time. Along with guest artist Guy Few, the VI Symphony will celebrate the life and music of “Papa Haydn” with an Anniversary Surprise Party.
Students will hear the overture to Haydn’s opera, Armida, and the famous “Toy” Symphony. (We don’t know for sure if Haydn wrote this work — it’s been attributed to him, to Leopold Mozart or to a Benedictine monk.) Guy Few will perform the famous Trumpet Concerto in E-flat and Piano Concerto No. 4 (both definitely by Haydn!). And finally, the work that gives our concert its name, Haydn’s Symphony No. 94, the “Surprise” symphony. By the time the show is over, you’ll know what is so surprising about it!
Pierre Simard is renowned across Canada for his fabulous original education shows. This show, which combines theatre and music, will feature a new script created just for the VIS. You’ll see Haydn himself (as portrayed by Simard) on stage, bringing the story of Haydn and his music to life.

How the Education Shows are funded The VI Symphony has presented Education Concerts on Vancouver Island for the past ten years allowing students to hear a symphony orchestra. Students come from the following communities: Cobble Hill, Cowichan, Duncan, Chemainus, Ladysmith, Nanaimo, Gabriola, Nanoose, Parksville, Qualicum, Port Alberni, Tofino, Ucluelet, Courtenay, Comox, the Discovery Islands and Campbell River. The students pay a seat cost of $7.50-$8.50 to cover 50% of the show in their community and the VI Symphony raises funds to cover the additional costs and these funds are specifically used for education & outreach symphony programs.
